Tips for Getting a Job Anywhere (1/4)
1. Grades are not the only thing that matters.
Your GPA is only one component that goes into impressing a hiring manager. Don’t kill yourself trying to get a 4.0 and neglect important things like networking and gaining relevant experience.
2. Tailor your resume to each company you apply to.
Sending the same resume to different types of companies/jobs won’t give you the best chance for success. Ask yourself what qualities and experience each company/job is looking for, and make those stand out on your resume.
3. Learn from others.
Email someone at a company you admire, tell them who you are and about your goals (but don’t outright ask for a job), and ask if you can buy them a coffee or have a phone call. Pick their brain about what they do and how they got there. Pay for the coffee and keep in contact.
Don’t be scared. People will most likely be flattered to hear from you. Ask them if there is anyone else they think would be good to learn from. This grows your network.
4. Get (or stay) healthy.
Keeping yourself healthy will make you more energetic, smarter, and happy. All things that’ll help you impress those you build relationships with.
5. Research the companies that you are applying to.
Know what they’ve done, what they do now, and what they want to do. Study their website, read their press releases, and make yourself more than just a kid who wants a job. If you understand their goals and can help achieve them, they’ll want you on their team.
